Tabadulat vs Robinhood: What Every Muslim Investor Needs to Know

Comparing Tabadulat and Robinhood for Halal investing? Here's how a purpose-built Shariah-compliant brokerage stacks up against one of the world's most popular investing apps.

Introduction

Robinhood made investing simple and commission-free for millions of people. It's a genuinely impressive app. But "impressive" isn't the same as "built for Muslim investors." Robinhood has no Islamic account, no Halal screening, and it earns real money from interest on customer cash. None of that makes it a bad platform, it just wasn't designed with Shariah compliance in mind.

This guide compares Tabadulat and Robinhood side by side, so you can make an informed, faith-aligned choice.

What Is Robinhood?

Robinhood is a US-based retail brokerage, regulated by the SEC and FINRA, offering commission-free trading in stocks, ETFs, options, and crypto.

Pricing: Standard accounts are free with no commission on stocks and ETFs. Robinhood Gold costs $5/month or $50/year, and adds perks like higher cash interest, a 3% IRA match, reduced futures and options fees, and research tools.

Interest on cash: Robinhood Gold members currently earn 3.35% APY on eligible uninvested brokerage cash through Robinhood's High-Yield Cash Program. This is a paid, interest-based feature, not something a Halal investor can use. (Standard, non-Gold accounts have earned varying rates over time; always check robinhood.com for the current rate.)

Revenue model: Per Robinhood's own Q1 2026 results, net interest revenue was $359 million out of $1.07 billion in total net revenue for the quarter, about 34% of everything Robinhood earned. That interest comes from margin lending, cash sweeps, and securities lending.

No Islamic account: Robinhood offers no Shariah screening, no Shariah Supervisory Board, no Halal compliance alerts, and no zakat calculator. A Muslim investor can use it carefully, buying only pre-screened Halal stocks, avoiding margin, options, and crypto, but every bit of that screening and discipline is on you. The platform gives no support for it.

What Is Tabadulat?

Tabadulat is a self-directed, Shariah-compliant brokerage, regulated by ADGM's FSRA under Financial Services Permission No. 250032, covering "Dealing in Investments as Principal (Matched)" and "Shari'a Compliant Regulated Activities."

On Tabadulat, Shariah compliance isn't something you manage, it's built into the platform.

Key features:

Pricing: Whole-share US stock trades are commission-free. Holding positions carries a 0.25%/year custody fee, fractional trades carry a $0.94 flat fee, and UAE residents pay 5% VAT on those two charges. No subscription, no account minimum.

Zakat tools: Tabadulat is currently building a Zakat calculator, this is on the roadmap, not live yet.

‍

Savings: Tabadulat's Murabaha Savings (Robinhood Has No Equivalent)

Robinhood's closest thing to a savings product is Gold's interest-bearing cash program, which is exactly the kind of riba a Muslim investor needs to avoid. It has no Halal alternative.

Tabadulat's savings product is built on Commodity Murabaha, a trade-based transaction, not interest.

  • How it works: Your capital buys tangible assets, which are then sold at a pre-agreed markup, giving a fixed, interest-free profit rate set at the start of the term.
  • Tiers: A zero-fee structure, Bronze ($1k–$9.9k), Silver ($10k–$99.9k), Gold ($100k–$499.9k), and Platinum ($500k–$999.9k).

For a Muslim investor, this is the difference between just avoiding riba and having an actual Halal way to grow idle cash, something Robinhood has no answer for.

Why It Matters

1. Who does the Shariah work? On Robinhood, you do, screening every stock yourself, avoiding margin, options, and crypto on your own. On Tabadulat, the platform screens everything before it's shown to you, and alerts you the moment anything changes.

2. Interest is a real part of Robinhood's business. Net interest revenue made up roughly a third of Robinhood's total revenue last quarter. Tabadulat generates zero riba from idle cash, by design.

3. Margin, options, and crypto raise real Shariah questions. These involve gharar (excessive uncertainty) and riba (interest), and Robinhood offers all three. Tabadulat offers none of them, so the question of whether a product is Halal never comes up.

4. Shariah oversight is a legal requirement on Tabadulat, not a courtesy. The SEC and FINRA don't require any Islamic finance governance. Tabadulat's Shariah Supervisory Board and AAOIFI membership are conditions of its license, not optional extras.

Which Platform Is Right for You?

Choose Tabadulat if:

  • You want Shariah compliance built in, not something you manage yourself
  • You want zero riba on your cash, while investing and while saving
  • You want real-time alerts if a holding's status changes
  • You're comfortable with a small custody fee in exchange for full Shariah oversight

Consider Robinhood only if:

  • You're disciplined enough to screen every stock yourself, using a separate Halal tool, before every trade
  • You're comfortable avoiding margin, options, and crypto entirely
  • You're not concerned about a revenue model built partly on interest

Conclusion

Robinhood is a great app for the general investor, but it wasn't built with Muslim investors in mind, and it shows. No Islamic account. No Halal screening. Interest on cash making up around a third of its revenue. None of the Shariah oversight a Halal investor actually needs.

Tabadulat solves every one of those gaps by design, AAOIFI membership, a Shariah Supervisory Board required by its license, real-time compliance alerts, zero riba on idle cash, and a Murabaha savings product Robinhood simply has no version of. For a Muslim investor who wants to invest and save without carrying the compliance burden themselves, Tabadulat is the clear choice.
