Is CHS (CHSCN) stock Halal?
CHS, Inc. (CHSCN) is not Shariah compliant in the September 2026 AAOIFI screening: it fails the interest-bearing investments, interest-bearing debt and preference share screens. Tabadulat re-screens CHSCN monthly, and a stock can return to compliance when new financial reports change its ratios.
As a preferred stock, it holds a higher claim on assets and earnings compared to common stock. This asset is issued by CHS a cooperative involved in energy, grains, and foods. The perpetual nature of this stock implies that it does not have a maturity date, providing a continuous stream of dividends to investors as long as the company deems it viable. Before any of that matters to a Muslim investor, one question comes first: is CHS stock Halal?
Is CHS Shariah compliant?
Consumer staples companies like CHS face the screening question at the shelf, not the balance sheet: does any revenue come from alcohol, tobacco or other impermissible lines? AAOIFI Shariah Standard No. 21 tolerates such income only below 5% of revenue, with the financial ratios checked behind it.
Does CHS pass the business activity test?
The activity screen is only part of the picture this month: CHS currently fails the interest-bearing investments, interest-bearing debt and preference share screens, so the overall verdict is not compliant regardless of the business itself. The watch item is the product mix: any alcohol, tobacco or similar lines count against the 5% ceiling.
Is CHS' income Halal?
Yes, within AAOIFI's tolerance. CHS' income from non-permissible sources stays below 5% of revenue in the September 2026 screening.
Does CHS meet AAOIFI's debt and investment ratio requirements?
No. Both ratios currently breach the 30% caps: interest bearing investments and interest bearing debt each exceed the limit AAOIFI permits for a Halal investment. The ratios move with the share price as well as the balance sheet, and our Shariah Supervisory Board has CHSCN re-screened every month. CHS also fails the preference share screen this month.
