Is Chegg (CHGG) stock Halal?
September 2026 AAOIFI screening result for Chegg, Inc. (CHGG): non-permissible income, pass. Interest-bearing investments, fail. Interest-bearing debt, fail. Preference shares, pass. Chegg, Inc. is not currently Shariah compliant. Re-screened monthly against AAOIFI Shariah Standard No. 21.
Chegg is an American education technology company that specializes in providing digital and physical textbook rentals, online tutoring, and other student services. The company's primary function is to alleviate the educational expenses often incurred by students through its rental service, which allows temporary access to textbooks at a fraction of the purchase cost. Chegg's platform also includes supplemental services such as homework help, scholarship searches, and internship listings, impacting sectors in online learning, higher education, and career development. Before any of that matters to a Muslim investor, one question comes first: is Chegg stock Halal?
Is Chegg Shariah compliant?
Consumer staples companies like Chegg face the screening question at the shelf, not the balance sheet: does any revenue come from alcohol, tobacco or other impermissible lines? AAOIFI Shariah Standard No. 21 tolerates such income only below 5% of revenue, with the financial ratios checked behind it.
Does Chegg pass the business activity test?
The activity screen is only part of the picture this month: Chegg currently fails the interest-bearing investments and interest-bearing debt screens, so the overall verdict is not compliant regardless of the business itself. The watch item is the product mix: any alcohol, tobacco or similar lines count against the 5% ceiling.
Is Chegg's income Halal?
Yes, within AAOIFI's tolerance. Chegg's income from non-permissible sources stays below 5% of revenue in the September 2026 screening.
Does Chegg meet AAOIFI's debt and investment ratio requirements?
No. Both ratios currently breach the 30% caps: interest bearing investments and interest bearing debt each exceed the limit AAOIFI permits for a Halal investment. The ratios move with the share price as well as the balance sheet, and our Shariah Supervisory Board has CHGG re-screened every month.
